Minoxidil is a rare drug that has been universally recognized as beneficial in the treatment of baldness and hair loss. Strangely enough, it is basically a drug used to treat high blood pressure but was later discovered to have efficacy in treating hair loss, based on this, it is made in the form of liquid, foam or spray for external use where it is applied directly to the head. Its commercial name is Rogaine and is mainly made up of 5% and 2% concentration.
Hair transplantation is a plastic surgery that has gradually evolved with the passage of time. It has started in a simple and not very effective way and has reached a high level of efficiency and modernity. Hair transplantation from the beginning has been based on the principle of the donor area of the head, from which hair follicles are extracted. The principle of the donor area has made hair transplantation an unprecedented and effective procedure. The reason is that the hair follicles that are extracted from the donor area are strong follicles and resistant to baldness, when these strong and resistant follicles are implanted in the rest of the head, we get full hair with the resistance to baldness. Hair transplantation is not limited to one technique or one method but can be implemented in many methods and techniques depending on the patient’s health and financial condition. But in general, the most prominent technique in hair transplantation is the FUE technique.
Minoxidil gives its effectiveness through long use and its results are not direct, but gradual. The response to minoxidil begins after about 3-6 months and continues to respond with continued use. However, minoxidil does not give a definite response to all patients since its effectiveness varies from person to person. in addition, the effectiveness of minoxidil stops by stopping its use means that the hair usually continues to fall again once you stop using the medicine. Because minoxidil has a vasodilator effect, it provides a big amount of blood to the area where it is applied, in other words, hair follicles will get more nutrients and supportive through blood. But we cannot say that this is the main reason for stopping hair loss since the effect of minoxidil is still not quite clear.
For hair transplantation it is a final and effective solution, if a person undergoes a hair transplant after the baldness has stabilized in his final form, the results he has got will continue with him throughout his life. The area that can be covered by hair transplantation depends on the number of follicles that can be extracted from the donor area, but in general patients often get satisfactory results.
In cases of genetic baldness, the patient may not be able to stop using minoxidil completely because this will mean the return of baldness and hair loss again. In terms of cost, minoxidil as a drug should be used for very long periods of time. It is very expensive. It is not limited to two or three doses of medication, but most likely the patient will continue to purchase it throughout the long treatment period.
For hair transplantation, the patient pays the cost once and then gets rid of the expensive treatment costs forever. In general, hair transplantation is inexpensive in Turkey as it does not cost as much as in some European countries.
Minoxidil has several side effects that vary from person to person and may continue during and after treatment.
The side effects of hair transplant will end shortly after the surgery and will not affect the patient’s future health.
